westeros as we know it

follow us to the land of AU...

As you may have learned by now, ATEAO is the AU spinoff of another ASOIAF RPG that ran for a few years. You will find a breakdown of the history of each region according to our timeline, as well as a genealogy of the ruling Houses. It will give you an overview of each of them, and their region's involvement in the past 18-20 years. This forum will explain where we broke from canon, and where the story has gone. You can use the overview of each region to figure out how a minor house in that area would have been involved in the major events.

What is true for all of them is that Robert's Rebellion never happened, and instead was called the War of the Seven. Brandon and Rickard Stark did not march south to save Lyanna, and they were never murdered by King Aerys. They knew where she was, albeit angrily, and that she was not coming back to Winterfell. The war that happened was a different war entirely - it was a war to overthrow the Mad King, with the secret aim of putting his son Rhaegar on the Iron Throne. Instead of being ripped apart, the realms banded together and saved Westeros from a madman. Though Jaime Lannister is still the one who truly ended it all, he was not executed for his actions nor was he allowed to remain in the Kingsguard, instead being released by the new King Rhaegar and sent back to Casterly Rock as its heir. The Targaryen dynasty isn't only still in control, but stronger than ever, having discovered dragon eggs in the dragonmont of Dragonstone. It was only a matter of time and personal events before they subsequently started to hatch.

I sincerely hope that none of you are overwhelmed by these changes! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! We have a number of members that have stuck with us from the first incarnation of the site. They are all wonderful and helpful, and could answer more detailed questions you might have.

WINTER ALWAYS COMES

Ruled by the stolid and fearsome Rickard Stark, the North has been led into rebellions and wars three times since the Old Wolf came to helm. First during the Ninepenny Kings, where northmen and southrons alike put a smashing halt to Maelys Blackfyre and his Golden Company on the Stepstones. The second, the mighty and long War of the Seven (our AU version of Robert's Rebellion) was a kingdom-wide war against the Mad King led and orchestrated by Rickard Stark, Tywin Lannister, Hoster Tully, Jon Arryn, Robert Baratheon and lastly Lord Whent after meeting at the Tourney at Harrenhal. The third and last war, another Blackfyre rebellion, saw the destruction of both Ironborn and lost Targaryen ilk alike. Over the span of nearly four decades, the North has seen nothing but victory, and with Lyanna Stark put on the throne after their extermination of the Mad King in 283AC, the cold reminder that winter is coming reaches farther and deeper than ever before. Especially now that direwolves have returned to Lord Stark and his House, bonding to his daughters and each of his grandchildren with a force not even history has yet seen.

LEGENDS IN THE MOUNTAINS

Much older than the other great lords, Jon Arryn presided over the Vale of Arryn for nearly six decades. He was alive when Summerhall burned, when Aerys Targaryen first ascended the Iron Throne, when he twisted into the Mad King and forced his mountainous region into rebellion. The War of the Seven (our AU version of Robert's Rebellion) was not kind to the Vale, however, for Lord Jon's call to banners roused only protest. Having to use his own knights to quell the uprisings and force his own vassals into war, it did not come without a price most citizens of the Vale were unwilling to pay. Though Jon Arryn saw his men to victory alongside Hoster Tully, Tywin Lannister and Rickard Stark, the Arryn armies returned to a region tearing at its seams. The Mountain Clans had taken the opportunity to reap and pillage what had been left behind by all the men marching to war, and now even the inheritance of the Eyrie was suddenly debated by all. Denys Arryn, a cousin to Lord Jon, stood at the helm of House Waynwood's efforts to supplant him as their new Warden of the East. After all, Jon's nephew Elbert had yet to prove himself, even with Lysa Tully as his betrothed, whereas Denys had done much and more to please the smallfolk and his noble peers as Keeper of the Gates of The Moon; a title that should have rightfully gone to Elbert. The War of the Seven left the commons of Gulltown angry and restless, and many turned to Denys to quell them... but refusing to tear his own realm apart, Lord Denys' own son Caspar paired efforts with the rightful heir and together, Caspar and Elbert slowly stitched the Vale whole once more. Now that winter has already seemed to come for them, however, the Mountain Clans are once more roused from their holes and hovels in desperation, and are a constant threat that lurks for all the settlements in their wake.

A TALE OF IRON

Consumed by the need for independence and the revival of their Old Ways, the Iron Islands have lost much and more over the past two decades. Ruled long and hard by Balon's father Quellon Greyjoy and his cold wife Gwynesse, the ironborn went long ignored by both the Wardens of the North and Westerlands, and did not even answer Rickard Stark's call to banners during our AU version of Robert's Rebellion, the War of the Seven. Falling prey to the poisonous and false promises of Haegon Blackfyre, the pretender king to the Iron Throne, House Greyjoy and their closest bannermen soon began to build both a plot and a rebellion against House Targaryen alongside the Blackfyre ilk. Ironborn ships were pledged to Haegon's cause and for in return, the driftwood crown. Assassinated by the Blackfyres and robbed of his fleet and his promises, Quellon was lost at sea and his wife soon fell victim to the Great Plague that rocked the Seven Kingdoms in 284AC. In retaliation for his father's murder, Balon Greyjoy soon led a rebellion of his own -- only to be defeated at the Shields by Daeron Velaryon and taken as hostage to King's Landing. It has been only recently, sixteen years later, that the Iron Islands were returned their rightful liege -now a man grown- and only time will tell how well his men will receive him.

AS THE RIVERS RUN

Long-time allies of the North and the Westerlands, the Riverlands has always joined in with the greater cause. Having been the first to begin machinations against the Mad King decades ago, Hoster Tully has led his region into triumph after triumph. As the home of the massive Tourney at Harrenhal, it was here the great lords and the tournament's host, Lord Whent, finally met to ignite their long-awaited rebellion against Aerys Targaryen. While the War of the Seven (our AU version of Robert's Rebellion) left the Riverlands toiled and littered with the dead, its dutifully-minded populace was able to bring recovery back to the lands within the year. For almost the past two decades, the region has been able to enjoy a quiet sense of peace, and though its liege Hoster Tully at last breathed his last breath with the new year's turn, his son Edmure does what he can to rule the Riverlands in his place. With winter approaching and already claiming much of his realm's crops, the newly-made Lord of Riverrun, so soon after ascension, has many challenges to face in the coming times.

HISTORY MADE OF GOLD

With Tywin Lannister at its helm for nearly four decades, the Westerlands have seen times of war, times of peace and times of abundant trade. The time spent under the man who once served as Hand of the King have been shrewd but ultimately prosperous, and Lannisport has suffered very little since the Mad King met his end at the point of Jaime Lannister's sword. Even during the Great Plague that wiped out almost a quarter of the realm's population seemed to be somewhat minimal behind the golden mountains. One of the great allies that tied together our AU version of Robert's Rebellion, the War of the Seven, the Westerlands have remained a beacon of strength and wealth -- and even moreso since Tywin agreed to make a second wife out of Ashara Dayne. With Casterly Rock filled with Lannister children and one of them married to a prince of the Iron Throne, there is no doubt centuries will pass with the golden lion still ruling the Westerlands. In late 300 AC, however, Tywin Lannister was found dead in his solar, and the cause has yet to be determined. Now the entire Seven Kingdoms look to his son Jaime as he ascends the untouchable pedestal Lord Tywin left behind.

WRITTEN IN FIRE AND BLOOD

History of the lands directly ruled by the Iron Throne are known by most, if not taught by all. After the Tragedy of Summerhall and the death of King Jaehaerys a short three years later, Aerys Targaryen with his sister-wife Rhaella ascended the crown and reigned over the Seven Kingdoms for nearly twenty years. With Tywin Lannister beside him as Hand, the two watched the realms bloom into prosperity. But after the well-known event of the Defiance of Duskendale, the influx of the King's pyromancers as his madness grew and the fateful War of the Seven that at last brought the Mad King to his end, his son Rhaegar Targaryen came to the Iron Throne and delivered order to the realms with Lyanna Stark at his side. Though plagued by the murders of his wife Elia Martell and his daughter Rhaenys, justice was swiftly served upon the Blackfyre rebels and their Ironborn allies and since then, in addition to the return of dragons to their House, not a single hand was raised against the Iron Throne. In 297 AC, when the Queen Mother Rhaella passed, it seemed one of the most detrimental events to happen to the royal family since before the War of the Seven. Still, House Targaryen remains as strong and united as ever, spreading cadet branches to Summerhall, to Dorne and even to Highgarden.

THE BALLAD OF ROSES

One of the only realms to not have been brought into the great fold by the allies that made up the War of the Seven, Mace Tyrell summoned his forces beneath the Mad King's banners. Even setting aside ancient tensions with the Dornish, Highgarden doubled their numbers by fighting alongside them. Since the coming of Aegon I, House Tyrell have been loyal bannermen to House Targaryen, and had Lord Mace known the rebellion would place Rhaegar on the throne, he would have perhaps been more than happy to help topple the Mad King for him. Alas, keeping true to his vows, he fought under the three headed dragon in the name of Aerys Targaryen. The whole of the Reach beneath him believed they were fighting rebels of the throne. Little did they know, they were fighting against the very forces that Rhaegar himself had called for, and after suffering a major defeat in the Riverlands, the Reach retreated back to their castles, resumed enmity with the Dornish, and focused on healing their grievous wounds. Though they hosted the year's historical Harvest Tourney in 283AC, it was not until 296AC that they were rewarded for their service and their loyalty - the young heir Willas Tyrell earning a betrothal and marriage to Princess Daenerys Targaryen and her dragon.

MEDLEY OF STORMS

Almost forty years ago, the Stormlands and its leader were great friends of the Iron Throne. The once-Prince Aerys was close comrades with Steffon Baratheon, fighting alongside each other during the War of the Ninepenny Kings and watching their other unblooded brother Tywin Lannister knight the royal prince with honor. Shortly after the Defiance of Duskendale, Lord Steffon met his end at shipwreck, he and his lady wife lost amongst the rocks and the storming sea as their three sons watched from the keep of Storm's End. It was not until their heir Robert came of age and returned from the Vale did he take full helm of the Stormlands, and encouraged by his betrothal to Lyanna Stark, he made for a fine commander and soldier. The Stormlands were called to war once allying with Tywin Lannister, Rickard Stark, Jon Arryn and Hoster Tully, and spending the year warring against the Reach and besieging King's Landing, Robert returned with Cersei Lannister at his side instead of his desired she-wolf. Now after almost twenty years, the Stormlands continue to enjoy the boisterous ruling of their lord and his mirror-image heir.

THE SANDS OF TIME

Brought into the fold of the Seven Kingdoms first by conquest, then by rebellion, then finally by marriage, the Lords Martell have always been weary allies of the Iron Throne. The union of their Princess Elia to Rhaegar the Dragon Prince brought them even closer under the Mad King's thumb, but with Elia and Rhaenys' murders in 283AC, King Rhaegar has allowed his late wife's home to retain much of their independence. Ruled for over forty years by the slow-to-act Doran Martell, Dorne has known little else other than peace since the War of the Seven, but still some are quick to chide him on it. Some had wished Dorne rebelled in vengeance for the deaths of Elia, Rhaenys, Lewyn and the ten thousand Dornish spears sent to fight in the War of the Seven, but kept placated by their ruling House, the red sands of the seventh kingdom remained a great contributor to the stability of the rest of the realm. With Prince Doran's appointment to the Small Council as Master of Laws, Dorne is not without a ruling voice in the King's ear, and takes great pride in knowing the heir to the Iron Throne has hot Dornish bloods in his veins.
